iPhone 3G announced for July 11th availability, but lots of questions remain

Wow, the WWDC keynote by Steve Jobs, live coverage here, went on for almost two hours with the first hour mainly devoted to application demonstrations for apps that won’t be available until July, September, and beyond. It concluded in the last few minutes with the announcement of the iPhone 3G that is priced extremely low (especially if you are outside the US) for a high end device with excellent stated battery life and fast download speeds. It was also a bit of a downer as the device won’t be available for another month.

However, there are still lots of unanswered questions that I hope those in attendance may be able to find out for all of us. We now have a month to think about the purchase so there won’t be any hasty decisions made today. If Apple would have released it today, I would have been one of the first in the stores (I am bad that way), but now we’ll have to see more details before I make a purchase decision.

Some of the main questions I have regarding the new hardware and iPhone 2.0 update are as follows:

  • What Bluetooth profiles does it support (DUN, Bluetooth keyboards, A2DP headsets)?
  • What is the camera resolution and does it capture video (the back opening in the photos make it look the same as the current model)?
  • Is cut/copy/paste supported?
  • Is VoIP supported?
  • Does it auto-rotate in more applications than the browser or photos?
  • Can I download podcasts wirelessly?
  • Is there a FM transmitter or radio in the device?
  • Is a new contract required or is the two prices full retail price from Apple?
  • Are there any changes in the data plan rates due to 3G? (Thanks Kevin Tofel)

Are you planning to buy an iPhone 3G? What other questions do you have regarding this new device?

I have several Nokia and Windows Mobile devices to further evaluate with some other surprises hopefully coming soon so stay tuned to my blog if you want to check out other alternatives to the new iPhone as we wait for a month to see the new iPhone up close and personal.

UPDATE: The iPhone 3G site is now live on Apple.com and the tech specs indicate it has the same 2 megapixel camera without flash and basically the same hardware features as the current model, with exception of GPS, 3G data (quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA) and a slimmer form factor.
